You did not bear the shame.
You bestowed the eternally vigilant symbol of change
by sacrificing your impassioned lives for freedom, justice and honor.
Many in the Wehrmacht hated Hitler and understood he was going to destroy the country they loved. He was going to destroy the country for which they donned their uniforms.
However, while many hated him, only a very few ever did something to try to save their country. And it is for those patriots the Germans erected the “German Resistance Memorial.”
The Germans were blessed with patriots who valued “doing what is right” over their paychecks. Men who valued attempting to save their country over their own property, family, and lives.
Hundreds, if not thousands, of Wehrmacht actively sought to stop a man that they (correctly) believed was destroying their country.
As the inscription at their memorial says, they knowingly traded their lives for “freedom, justice and honor.” Remarkable.
The men for whom the “Gedenkstätte Deutscher Widerstand” was created are of a breed that probably died out when the last of them were executed for “treason.”
What a shame.
